Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI)

SIMI’s genesis lies in the Jamaat-e-Islami. The Jamaat has been functioning as a cultural organization committed to propagating neoconservative Islam among Muslims. In 1956, it set up a students’ wing, the Students Islamic Organization (SIO). In April 1977, SIMI was formed to revitalize the SIO as a response from the hardliners to the reformism of the Jamaat mainstream. The SIO, initially operating in Uttar Pradesh, spread its influence in other states, such as Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal and Kerala. It is believed that SIMI established links with the LeT, JeM and HUJI; and the members of SIMI attended training camps across the border, set up by these organizations.
